Google Spark: The new digital assistant that automates your daily tasks

Google has released Google Spark, an AI automation assistant for Google Workspace.

Developers and power users can utilize a new 'skills' framework, triggered via a slash command in text inputs, to automate actions across Gmail, Docs, and Calendar.

The platform requires a Pro or Ultra subscription and includes specific safety guidelines, with Google explicitly advising against inputting credentials or financial data.

Note that current availability excludes the EEA, UK, Switzerland, and Nigeria.

How Spark works

The assistant is designed to take on repetitive tasks, freeing up time from your daily routine. It is available in apps for mobile phones and Mac computers, as well as via the browser on its website.

When used through Chrome, Spark can perform tasks like making restaurant reservations or planning trips. Users can track the progress of tasks the assistant has taken on through a dedicated dashboard.

Requirements and availability

To use Spark, you need to have an active Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription. Additionally, you must have the “Keep activity” setting enabled on your account.

Currently, the tool is not available in certain regions, namely the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Nigeria.

Instructions and safety

Google has replaced Gemini Gems with “skills.” You can define these skills to give the Assistant specific instructions on how to perform a task. To use them, simply type a slash (/) followed by the skill name in the text box.

Despite its usefulness, the company warns against ever entering sensitive data into the tool, such as passwords or payment information.
