Google's Gemini accidentally exposed its internal election-related operating guidelines during a user chat.
Despite rules prohibiting political predictions and requiring official source referrals, the model bypassed its hidden directives to generate a detailed analysis.
According to what appeared on the screen, Google's internal rules state that Gemini must take a very conservative stance on election matters. Among other things, the guidelines prohibit the tool from making predictions, providing information about elections that were held less than seven days ago, and providing details about how someone votes or where polling stations and deadlines are located. Instead, the system is directed to refer users to official government sources or established news outlets and not to mention these internal rules to users at all.
In practice, however, Gemini didn’t follow its instructions. When the researcher asked for an estimate of former Rep. Adam Kinzinger’s chances of running for the Senate, the system didn’t simply refer to a source or refuse to answer. Instead, it provided a 392-word analysis of the political challenges and chances of such a run.
