Government websites temporarily down in Europe and Canada due to serious security issue

Government websites in the EU and Canada went offline preventively following two PHP vulnerabilities.

The PHP Foundation released patches for the affected software versions, prompting international agencies and official bodies to urge immediate system updates.

The move comes after the PHP Foundation announced that it was releasing updates to address two serious security vulnerabilities. According to reports and statements from officials, governments in the Netherlands, Denmark, France and Finland have temporarily disabled some of their websites as a precautionary measure. At the same time, Canada's Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, Evan Solomon, confirmed the decision to temporarily take down some services and called on all website administrators to update immediately.

The PHP programming language is widely used to build websites and is behind popular platforms like WordPress and Drupal. The issues were recently uncovered thanks to the use of artificial intelligence tools by cybersecurity companies. These vulnerabilities could allow someone to hack into a system and potentially take control of it.

According to statements by the director of the Drupal Association, Tiffany Farriss, systems using any version of the language released in the last two decades are vulnerable.
