How Elizabeth Holmes Tried to Make a Documentary Just Before Going to Prison

Unusual documentary details reveal how Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes approached production company A24 just before her 2023 imprisonment.

Featuring Nathan Fielder and director Lance Oppenheim, the project involved memory-based conversation reconstructions and an AI avatar.

During the meetings, Holmes insisted to Fielder that she had committed no crime and that people were living a false reality about her. While filming was underway, an op-ed about Holmes was published in the New York Times, which reportedly angered her and her husband. The couple argued that a statement about a fictional character had been taken out of context and offered evidence that had never been shared.

After Holmes was taken to prison, Fielder was not allowed to carry recording devices with him when he visited her, so he had to rely on his memory to reconstruct their conversations. To analyze Holmes' behavior, he enlisted the help of actress Amanda Seyfried, who read scripts of their conversations from memory. At the same time, Evans built a digital AI model of his wife on a vertical screen so that she could sit with him and their children at the dinner table.
