How to get a free address for your website today

Following legal pressures, free domain extensions like.tk and.ml have been discontinued.

This change highlights a shift toward platform-managed subdomains for free web hosting.

For developers, services like GitHub Pages, Netlify, and Vercel remain standard, but these come with trade-offs regarding portability and DNS control.

This overview explores the current state of free hosting alternatives and what you need to consider when selecting an address for your next project.

Professional addresses with package purchase

If your goal is a professional website, the best solution is to purchase a hosting plan. Many companies offer a free professional domain name, such as “onoma.com” or “onoma.org,” for the first year. After that period, renewing the domain name requires payment.

Using platforms for personal pages

For personal use, you can create a subpage on well-known platforms. In this case, your address will be in the form of "onoma.platforma.com".

  • For simple use: Platforms like WordPress.com and Blogger allow you to create blogs without any coding knowledge required.
  • For developers: Services like GitHub Pages, Netlify, and Vercel provide free space and addresses for those who upload their own code.

A major drawback here is that the address doesn't actually belong to you. This means that if you want to change providers in the future, you can't take the address with you.

Community platforms for full control

There are community services, such as FreeDNS, that offer free addresses with full customization. However, these addresses are considered less reliable. Because such services are often used for illegal activities, these addresses may be blocked by security programs or corporate filters.

What you need to know before you start

When you choose a free address, you are essentially using a piece of content that belongs to a third party, which can affect the appearance of your page. Additionally, whichever method you choose, remember that after activating a new address, it can take up to 48 hours for it to appear properly on all devices worldwide.
