How to mark, save, and share a place on Google Maps

Google Maps supports marking arbitrary points, not only listed businesses or street addresses.

On mobile, a long press lets users label a location, save it to a list, add a note, or share it.

On desktop, clicking a point reveals coordinates and an information panel.

The guide also covers My Maps, where a custom map can contain up to 10,000 lines, shapes, or places.

How to mark a place on Google Maps

Google Maps lets you mark and save a place even if it doesn't correspond to a specific business or address. You can tag it, add it to a list, or share it.

From mobile

  1. Open the Google Maps app and find the point you want.
  2. Long press on the point to note it.
  3. To add a tag, select the corresponding option next to “Directions.” The point will appear in the “Tagged” section of the “Saved” tab.
  4. To save it to a list, tap "Save" and choose the list you want. You can also add a note.
  5. To send it to someone, click "Share" and choose a sending method.

From computer

Open Google Maps and click on the location you want. A gray dot will appear, and its coordinates will be shown at the bottom of the screen. Click on the coordinates to open the location information. From there, you can save it, tag it, or share it.

You can also right-click on a point to copy the coordinates, share the location, or get directions to or from it.

Share your live location

To let someone see where you are as you move, tap your profile picture in the app and select “Share Location.” You can set how long your location will be shared, or choose to continue sharing until you stop it.

You can send the location directly to a contact who has a Google Account so they can see it in their Maps app. For other ways to send, select “More options.”

Create your own map

With Google My Maps, you can create a custom map with multiple layers to organize different categories of locations. Each map can contain up to 10.000 lines, shapes, or locations.

The maps are created on a computer, but you can also view them on the mobile app.
