Intel is preparing to launch a high-end Nova Lake desktop CPU next year built on the new 18A-P manufacturing process, aiming to challenge AMD's Ryzen X3D chips and strengthen its desktop lineup amid broader memory supply challenges.
According to Intel CFO David Zinsner, the Nova Lake series fills a gap in the company's high-performance desktop lineup. In the past, Intel's top-of-the-line models, such as the Core Ultra 9 285K released in late 2024, had lower power consumption but often lagged behind the competition in games. At the same time, data from Mercury Research showed that AMD increased its market share to 34,9% in the second quarter, leaving Intel at 65,1%.
What we know about the new features
Rumors suggest that the top-of-the-line Nova Lake model may feature 52 cores. Intel plans to reveal more details in January during the CES show in Las Vegas.
Difficulties with memories and perspectives
Beyond the new plans, Intel is facing a severe shortage of memory components, which led to a 20% drop in PC shipments in the third quarter. The company estimates that these difficulties will continue for at least the next two quarters, while it predicts that the overall PC market will decline by about 10% in 2027.
