Kwi, KDE’s new terminal app intended as a modern alternative to Konsole, uses Qt Quick and Kirigami for its interface and Ghostty’s libghostty-vt for terminal emulation.
A recent progress update details fixes and additions including tab controls, more keyboard shortcuts, screen-reader improvements and better compatibility with Konsole shortcuts.
KDE plans interim releases before Kwi 1.0, currently targeted for the coming months.
The developers say they have fixed many of the issues that were reported after the announcement. At the time of the update, there were no open bug reports for the project.
Users can set whether a new tab opens immediately after the active one, and whether closing a tab returns them to the one they were previously in. They can also switch tabs with the mouse wheel and set the initial size of the terminal window.
Improvements have been made to the appearance of various characters and underlines. The search bar has been moved, while results are now highlighted in color and the bar flickers less. There are also improvements for screen readers, more keyboard shortcuts, and better compatibility with Konsole shortcuts.
When resizing the window, Kwi refreshes its image with fewer unnecessary repetitions. This also fixes an issue that affected newer versions of Bash, the program used to execute commands. Tab strip display issues at certain zoom settings have also been fixed. The application can now also be displayed in the GNOME notification center.

Kwi is going through the KDE Review process, which precedes the recognition of an experimental application as an official KDE project. The required checklist has been completed. The next steps include translations and access to the infrastructure needed for KDE releases.
Once the process is complete, the developers plan to release Kwi 0.1, its first official release, along with a Flatpak package on Flathub. No date has been announced. There are also interim releases planned before version 1.0, with version 1.0 tentatively scheduled for the coming months. The timeline also ties in with Ghostty's plans to release a stable version of the core component that Kwi uses.
The ability to split the window into multiple regions has been confirmed for a pre-stable release, but it has not been announced which release it will be added to. The developers also plan to integrate Kwi into Dolphin, Kate, and Yakuake. These currently use the Konsole terminal plugin to display a terminal within their windows.
Despite progress, Kwi remains experimental and is not yet a replacement for Konsole.
