Mozilla's 87-page report details how Microsoft uses dark patterns and system prompts to prioritize the Edge browser on Windows 11, highlighting the impact of regional regulations on platform defaults.
According to a Mozilla executive, the company is doing everything it can to comply with laws surrounding user choice. The organization published a massive 87-page report documenting how Windows aggressively promotes Edge. For example, after a system update, a window often appears prompting users to complete their computer setup. There is a default setting there that, if not checked, automatically makes Edge the default browser for browsing the web.
The situation in Europe and Mozilla's demands
These practices are not seen in Europe, as European laws force Microsoft to be more respectful of citizens' choices. In European countries, the Start menu opens links in the user's designated program rather than Edge. Mozilla is asking Microsoft to bring this European version of Windows to the rest of the world, although it believes that doing so will require government intervention.
The organization also says it frequently receives complaints from Firefox users who are confused because their bookmarks have disappeared after Windows changed their default browser to Edge.

Finally, he reminded that Mozilla's revenue comes primarily from its agreement with Google, which pays to be the default search engine in Firefox.
