Nautilus My Computer: An Alternative to Disk Management in Linux

Nautilus My Computer is a third-party extension for the GNOME Nautilus file manager, aiming to restore the 'Computer' view for disk and partition management.

It features custom sidebar configurations and an optional column-view interface.

Developers should note that this project is not officially maintained by the GNOME project and utilizes unofficial APIs, which could introduce stability issues.

It currently supports Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (GNOME 50), with further distribution planned.

What does the add-on offer?

From this page, you can manage your drives directly, such as opening, unmounting, or safely removing them. In addition, the add-on adds some features to better organize your file manager:

  • Quick access: A section for the folders you use most often.
  • Adjustment: Possibility of changes in the program sidebar.
  • View in columns: An optional feature that displays the contents of folders in side-by-side columns, similar to the logic followed by the Finder on macOS.

Important notes on use

It is important to note that Nautilus My Computer is not an official part of GNOME or Nautilus. Corporate support for the corresponding "Computer" feature was removed from the file manager in 2012.

As this is a third-party add-on, installation requires the use of additional software sources (PPA). Currently, a ready-made package is available for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (GNOME 50), while the developer is planning support for Ubuntu 26.10.

Finally, because the tool interferes with the way the file manager works without official cooperation with the GNOME creators, its use may in some cases affect the stability of the program.
