New company unveils artificial intelligence built almost automatically by other artificial intelligence

Startup Recursive has released Flint, a 40B-parameter open-weight AI coding model built using recursive self-improvement.

The company utilized an automated system called the Eureka Machine to handle training, architecture design, and code optimization, enabling a small team to complete development in months.

The uniqueness of the model is that almost the entire development process was done automatically by artificial intelligence itself, through a method where systems are used to improve the next stage.

How Flint was made

According to Recursive CEO and co-founder Richard Socher, the company used an internal system called the Eureka Machine to automate most of the creation stages.

This system developed new training methods, new model structures, and improved code. This approach allowed a very small team of researchers to complete the project in just a few months.

Flint has 40 billion parameters and was tested by a Wired journalist on a Mac with 48GB of RAM. According to the company, the model outperforms other similarly sized models on programming tasks.

Security concerns

The idea of autonomously improving AI systems raises concerns. Some experts fear that systems capable of continuously improving themselves could one day escape human control.

These fears were heightened last September when a researcher left Anthropic warning about the dangers of autonomous improvement. Meanwhile, bills have been introduced in Congress in the United States proposing to ban such practices.

Recursive dismisses these concerns as overblown. Socher states that Flint was built with a system that cannot escape human control, and that the entire process is overseen by humans who have the ability to stop it at any time.

Financing and investors

The company has raised $650 million in funding, reaching a valuation of $4,65 billion. Recursive's investors include venture capital funds from Google, Nvidia, and AMD, as well as Greycroft.
