Ubuntu 26.10 arrives with Rust-based core utilities, passkey login support, Linux kernel 7.3, GNOME 51, and Mesa 26.2.
Explore the key technical updates, including improved window tiling, TPM-backed full-disk encryption, and a dedicated amd64v3 optimized installer image.
New features in apps and settings
On the apps side, the document viewer now allows users to add handwritten signatures to PDF files. Signatures can be made with a mouse, stylus, touchscreen, or via an imported photo. Taking screenshots has gained more precise control over options via the keyboard, while the sound heard during capture has also been changed.
The main app store has a separate section for additional hardware drivers and media files, while it aggregates details for different app formats. In the system settings, options have been added to automatically disable the touchpad when a mouse is connected, as well as control of auto-rotation on touchscreens. At the same time, the system remembers and restores brightness and color settings for each display separately even after rebooting, while old support for WEP-type wireless networks has been removed.
Hardware support and technical improvements
The new release is based on the GNOME 51 update series, Mesa 26.2 graphics drivers, and Linux kernel 7.3, with a planned nine-month support period. In disk management, full-disk encryption is now available on devices without built-in trusted hardware, requiring the use of a personal PIN or passphrase during installation.
