Read on to explore the context around this case and the broader wave of litigation facing major social media platforms.

The case was to be the company’s first trial over the effects of social media on young people, following out-of-court settlements with other companies including Meta, TikTok and YouTube. According to the documents, the plaintiffs began using YouTube at the age of 3 and other platforms around the age of 9, developing compulsive usage habits due to features such as autoplay and endless scrolling.

A company spokesperson said the two sides resolved the issue amicably and recalled existing safeguards, educational tools and partnerships with experts. It is noted that major social media companies are facing thousands of lawsuits in courts over allegations that their platforms are intentionally designed to addict young people.
