Tesla plans to sell Cybercab by the end of 2026, while authorities review its safety

Tesla has confirmed its timeline for selling the Cybercab, an autonomous two-seater devoid of traditional manual controls, setting a goal for the end of 2026.

The announcement arrives alongside an NHTSA investigation into the company's safety certification procedures.

The regulatory review focuses on whether the vehicle's design meets federal standards, raising questions about the certification requirements for vehicles built without steering wheels or brake pedals.

How is it different from other Tesla models?

The Model 3, Model Y and Roadster are intended for user ownership and not for use as autonomous taxis. Elon Musk also announced that the release of software for fully autonomous, unsupervised driving will be delayed and will be released in the second quarter.

Security research

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reviewing whether the Cybercab meets federal safety standards. The investigation focuses on Tesla's own safety certification process.

Current rules require manual checks on vehicles. The U.S. Department of Transportation has proposed eliminating this requirement for autonomous vehicles, but current rules still require it.
