Topgolf says its move from VMware to VergeOS saved more than $11.3 million.

It replaced 650 VxRail hosts with about 400 Dell PowerEdge servers in roughly six months.

A VergeIO-published case study details a shift from six-node, 35 TB VxRail groups to three-node, 5 TB VergeOS groups, providing concrete infrastructure figures to examine alongside the reported savings.

One reason it chose VergeOS was that it could separate its systems into independent environments. Topgolf organized them by time zone, which Forehand says made upgrades and maintenance easier. It also created separate environments for testing within the same system, significantly reducing the need for additional lab equipment.

According to a case study published by VergeIO, Topgolf went from six-machine clusters with 35TB of storage to three-machine clusters with 5TB. Forehand said that, in a similar comparison, hardware costs were reduced by 87% and software costs by 77%. He also said that large increases in computing power and storage costs affected the initial calculations, but the savings are still very large.

Topgolf secured a five-year enterprise software license agreement, while VMware reportedly offered a three-year deal.

The transition also had to accommodate Topgolf’s specific needs. With the help of VergeIO employees, the company adapted the system to run Toptracer, its proprietary technology that uses machine learning to track the trajectory of golf balls.

VergeIO says it is acquiring about 70 new customers each quarter, and most of them, according to Crump, come from VMware. Crump said many companies consider the transition when their contract renewal is coming up, when they need new equipment, when they operate multiple sites or when they need separate environments. Many combine the transition with a hardware refresh or modernization.
