Tor Browser 16.0 released with new settings menu and additional protection

Tor Browser 16.0 is now available for Linux, Windows, macOS, and Android, upgrading its core to Firefox ESR 153 and overhauling the settings architecture.

Developers and privacy-focused users will find a completely redesigned user interface, reorganized security and connection panels, hidden fingerprinting vectors with warning labels, and core updates including Tor 0.4.9.15 and NoScript 13.6.37.1984.

New design in settings

One of the most noticeable changes is a complete redesign of the settings menu. The old general settings section has been split into separate categories, such as appearance, downloads, tabs, accessibility, and languages. At the same time, Tor-specific settings, such as connection and security level, have been rebuilt to fit the new environment.

Additionally, settings that could compromise privacy or facilitate user identification have been hidden or are now accompanied by warnings, while user preferences are normally preserved during the upgrade.

Protection from other applications

The new version adds an optional feature that hides web page titles. Normally, browser windows show which page the user is visiting, information that other local applications can read.

When the new option is enabled, titles are replaced with simply the phrase “Tor Browser,” preventing other applications from seeing the pages you visit. The feature remains disabled by default as the developers address potential compatibility issues with screen readers and window managers.

Support for new devices and changes to Linux

After about a year of testing, version 16.0 offers official support for Linux computers with 64-bit ARM processors.

On the other hand, support for older 32-bit Linux systems has been discontinued. According to the development team, this platform now counts around 200 daily update checks.

What's changing on mobile and computers

In the Android version, the browser gains improvements to the user interface and the developers have optimized resources to stay within the size limit for applications. Internally, the browser is now based on the latest version of Firefox ESR 153, while newer versions of the Tor subsystems and the NoScript security plugin have been integrated, along with bug fixes and security settings.
