Explore how WindBorne Systems collects global atmospheric data using a fleet of about 700 autonomous weather balloons and integrates sensor readings into its proprietary WeatherMesh AI forecasting model, backed by a new U.S.
Air Force contract worth up to $49 million.
The company has a fleet of about 700 autonomous balloons that collect measurements from the atmosphere across the planet. This data feeds directly into its own AI-powered weather forecasting model, known as WeatherMesh 6.
How the deal works
The airline pays for the data it needs at any given time. So far, orders worth $1,7 million have been placed.
The deal was awarded without a competitive bid, as the government determined that WindBorne has a unique ability to provide the required global data. The management of the company, founded in 2015 and based in California, includes CEO John Dean and co-founder and technical director Andrei Susko.
Flights in extreme conditions
WindBorne continues its testing and data-gathering missions. In August, the company successfully sent an unmanned aerial vehicle directly into the eye of a hurricane to gather valuable measurements from inside.
