USB flash drives have a finite number of write cycles, and stored data can degrade over time.

This article looks at why a USB stick is useful for portable storage but should not be the sole copy of important files, then outlines the 3-2-1 approach: three copies, across two local storage media and one online service.

The problem is that small sticks are easily lost or damaged. They can be forgotten somewhere or fall out of a bag. Bumps, rust on the connections, and poor construction can also cause damage. In places with a lot of moisture, mold can grow.

Their memory has a limited lifespan: it typically lasts about 10.000 to 100.000 writes. Frequent copying and changing of files gradually wears it down, reducing the available space and can eventually cause the stick to stop working. Over time, files can also become corrupted as the memory loses the electrical charge that keeps them stored. There is also a small chance that particles from space can alter data. The source estimates that about one such change can occur per gigabyte per month, at least at sea level.

That's why the stick is more suitable for files you want to keep, rather than files you constantly change or copy.

Keep more than one copy

For important files, follow the 3-2-1 rule: keep at least three copies, on two different media that are close to you and on an online storage service. For extra protection, you can store one of the media at another address or in a fireproof safe. For most people, this extra precaution may be overkill.

Don't rely solely on online services. They may require a subscription, be unavailable if your connection is interrupted, or experience serious damage. There are also concerns about the behavior or security of some companies.

For less important files, keep copies in places you can easily find and use: on your computer's internal drive, on the Internet, or on an external drive. If your computer stops working, it can be difficult to get your files back. You may need to remove the drive and connect it to another computer.
