Google has announced upcoming video app integration for Android Auto in selected vehicles, restricting playback exclusively to parked states while automatically falling back to audio-only streams during transit.
The update arrives alongside ongoing beta trials for browser apps and new audio libraries in Android Automotive.
The feature was introduced in May, with the aim of allowing drivers to watch content, such as YouTube videos, directly on the car's screen. For safety reasons, the image display will only be allowed when the vehicle is parked. Once the car starts moving, the video display will automatically stop and only the audio will continue to play in the background.
Unlike Android Auto’s mobile-connected platform, video apps are already available on the Android Automotive in-car system, while navigation apps are in beta testing. The company is also testing upgraded audio apps through its dedicated car app library, as well as new tools for calling and messaging.
