Sony has announced that physical disc production will permanently end by January 2028, highlighting ongoing challenges in game preservation, backward compatibility limitations, and hardware security research across modern console ecosystems.
Microsoft offers the ability for users to play older games on newer consoles. However, this policy has limitations. When the company officially ended the corresponding program in 2021 due to legal, licensing and technical obstacles, games and additional content were left out, as the old servers were shut down. At the same time, the company provides an official feature for developers that allows simple consoles to run community-created programs.
In contrast, Sony has a stricter policy and has announced that it will permanently stop producing physical discs by January 2028. These decisions have led the community to look for other solutions. Recently, a method has emerged to bypass the PlayStation 5 security measures for software versions up to 13.60, which allows the installation of programs that emulate older consoles so that users can play older media.
