Visa and National Cybersecurity Authority join forces against online fraud

Visa and the National Cybersecurity Authority are collaborating on a campaign for safer online shopping.

It highlights criminals’ use of AI to create fake shops and reviews, and gives shoppers practical guidance: enable transaction alerts, never share PINs or passwords, and contact delivery companies through their official channels.

To avoid financial losses, the two bodies suggest five practical steps that consumers should follow:

  • Payment protection: Never reveal your PIN, passwords or security details to sellers. Enable instant transaction notifications from your bank so you can immediately detect any unauthorized charges. In the event of a message requesting payment for delivery costs, do not follow links, but check the status of your order directly from the official website or app of the courier company.
  • Careful reading of reviews: Don’t rely solely on a business’s rating. Look for recent reviews, both positive and negative, and pay attention to the quality of their content. If the reviews seem identical or lack specific details, be extra cautious.
  • Price comparison: Check the price of the product on the manufacturer's official website or other well-known and trusted stores. If an offer seems too good to be true, it is likely a trap.
  • Critical thinking on artificial intelligence proposals: Digital tools can make it easier to find products, but they don't guarantee the reliability of a store. Before completing your purchase, do your own due diligence.
  • Seller information verification: Don't judge an online store's credibility just by the professional appearance of its website. Look for the seller's actual contact information and return policy, especially if you're making purchases through an online platform.

Michalis Bletsas, Director of the National Cybersecurity Authority, underlined that artificial intelligence has drastically changed the threat landscape, making fraud more plausible. For his part, Nikos Petrakis, Visa Country Manager for Greece, stressed the importance of the collective effort for transaction security, noting that the company is constantly investing in fraud prevention technologies, having contributed to reducing incidents in Europe by 24% over the last three years.
