Walmart is opening its platform to AI shopping agents with the introduction of the Agent Gateway, built on the model context protocol.
The new infrastructure allows approved agents to connect securely while protecting customer data and payment details.
Upcoming Agent Profiles will offer developers and users granular transaction controls, spending limits, and distinct operational rules.
The announcement was made by Walmart CEO John Furner at a conference in San Francisco. The company has already announced a partnership with Meta's Muse and offers connections to ChatGPT and Gemini.
New technology for connecting programs
The company unveiled Agent Gateway, a new system designed to allow approved AI programs to connect to Walmart’s systems, allowing the programs to help customers shop without having to reveal their personal information or purchase history directly to the program.
Starting next month, customers will be able to create separate profiles for the programs they use, to approve and separate AI purchases from their own.

Market controls and limits
Users will have control over the actions the AI makes on their behalf. They will be able to either approve each transaction individually or set a monetary limit on purchases.
The service will be available to all Walmart account holders, with no subscription required. Users will be able to delete their program profiles at any time.
Rules and transaction security
The company is introducing special terms that define the rights and operating rules of the programs. The programs will not be able to perform unintended actions, nor will they have access to customers' payment details or unnecessary information, while those that do not comply will be blocked.
The company's standard refund policy will normally apply even in cases where a program does not work as intended.
