As a designer working on a Mac, I’ve always felt like the odd one out when it comes to remote USB access tools. Most of the well-known utilities I tried in the past were focused almost entirely on Windows — including the one I used for years from usb-over-ethernet
When I switched my main workstation to macOS, that old software basically became useless. It didn’t receive updates anymore, support disappeared, and on top of that, my Linux render nodes still had no way to access my input devices remotely.
At some point I started searching for alternatives and eventually came across USB Network Gate. I wasn’t expecting much, but it turned out to be one of the few options that actually works across different operating systems without strange workarounds.
Right now, I can connect my 3D mouse or Wacom tablet to my Mac and let my Linux workstation pick it up over the local network. Nothing fancy — it just shows up and works, even though the systems are different. For my setup, that was exactly what I needed.
If anything changes or I run into new issues, I’ll update this post.
And if anyone knows of any other working alternatives for macOS + Linux, I'd be happy to try them and share my impressions later.
