I've frequently re-shared the common advice "apply even if you don't meet all the stated requirements" ... but I'll admit, it's still extremely tough to actually ACT on this advice. I've probably chickened out on more of them than I should. In the coming weeks, I'll probably start loosening my threshold even more!
That said, when I started searching before COVID, my wife asked me "if you could pick anywhere, where would you want to work." We discussed them as though they were real possibilities. Sometimes this discussion made my chances seem more real, sometimes not. But it definitely made me reflect heavily on the "what" and the "why" a job, team, or a mission might be a healthy fit. It definitely shed light on where I observed my experience may be lacking.
This drove me to eventually apply to all of them. I just sent a "cold call" email to recruiting for my final of the 3 "moonshot" shops.
Even if they don't lead to a new job, hopefully this exercise improved my approach to finding a good next fit. Even further, I won't have to wonder how my life might be different if I'd had the nerve to try.
