- deciding when the system should act autonomously
- deciding what the user must approve

This is a major UX shift because it reduces translation work. Historically, users had to convert what they were seeing into keywords, settings, menus, or forms. Multimodal systems reduce that friction.
The 2026 implication is straightforward: interfaces will increasingly be judged on whether they can work from lived context instead of demanding manual reconstruction of context. The strongest products will treat camera, screen, and voice as first-class inputs rather than premium extras.
3. Expressive motion and personality return at system level
What changed
For several years, mainstream product design over-indexed on neutral minimalism: flat surfaces, restrained color, sparse motion, and interchangeable component patterns. The counter-signal now comes from the platform level.

Google’s May 2025 Material 3 Expressive rollout for Android and Wear OS explicitly frames the refresh around interfaces that feel more fluid, personal, and glanceable. This is not just a concept deck.
