Softlock Is What Happens Between Trying and Quitting

Softlock is the stalled middle: you have not quit, but every next step feels heavier than it should. This is a field guide for noticing the stall and making one useful move.

Spot the softlock

  • You keep reopening the same tab without starting.
  • The task is vague, so every option feels equally urgent.
  • “I’ll do it later” becomes the only plan.

Break the loop

  1. Name the smallest visible action. Replace “work on the project” with “open the file and write one heading.”
  2. Shrink the commitment. Set a ten-minute timer; stopping afterward is allowed.
  3. Change the surface. Put the next action on paper, a blank document, or a short checklist.
  4. Leave a breadcrumb. Before you stop, write the next exact step so restarting costs less.

If you want a quick check-in, try the Softlock quiz, browse the daily reset, or read the field guide.
