Why HMRC Rejects Your Data: A Validation Story

Registration Failures Are Data Failures

Ask why a CDS application was rejected and the answer is rarely dramatic. It is almost always a validation error: a field somewhere does not match the record HMRC holds. Understanding registration as a series of data checks makes the whole process far more predictable.

The Fields That Get Checked

HMRC validates your identity across several records at once. Your business name and address must match your VAT registration exactly. Your Unique Taxpayer Reference must exist and belong to the applying entity. Your GB EORI must be active, not merely applied for, at the moment you subscribe. And the Government Gateway account submitting it all must be a business account, not a personal one. Each check, and how to pass it first time, is broken down in this CDS registration walkthrough.

Common Validation Errors

Inactive EORI at subscription time, the top rejection cause
VAT name or address mismatches against HMRC records
Missing UTR, especially among sole traders
Personal login where a business credential is expected

Design Your Inputs Before You Submit

Treat the application like any strict schema: gather the source records, confirm they agree with each other, then submit once. A rejection costs days, while a pre-check costs minutes.

The same logic applies to declarations themselves, which is why iCDS validates entries before submission and reaches 99% accuracy. Watch a demo
