Most "get more matches" advice is vibes. After building a tool that swipes for people and watching real numbers come in, here's what actually moves match rate - in rough order of impact.
1. Photos are 90% of the outcome
Not "your attractiveness" - your photos. The same person can 10x their match rate by changing the first photo. What works:
- First photo: face, daylight, no sunglasses, no group shot. The app shows a thumbnail. If a stranger can't parse your face in half a second, you're a left swipe.
- One photo doing something, not posing. Cooking, hiking, holding a dog. Context beats abs.
- Delete the blurry ones. One bad photo drags the whole profile down. People swipe on the worst photo, not the best one.
2. Your bio is a filter, not a resume
A bio that says nothing forces people to guess, and guessing turns into a left swipe. Two or three specific lines beat a paragraph. "Making ramen from scratch, losing at padel, will judge your Spotify" gives someone three easy openers. "Just ask" gives them nothing.
3. Swipe less, match more
Counterintuitive but real: mass right-swiping tanks your internal ranking. Tinder's algorithm reads indiscriminate swiping as low-value behavior and shows your profile to fewer people. A 20-30% right-swipe rate keeps you in better circulation than swiping right on everyone.
4. Message fast, message specific
Matches decay. Send the first message within a few hours, and reference something from their profile - not "hey". The match-to-conversation conversion is where most people actually lose, not the swipe.
5. Know your real numbers

The honest part
If you're a man on Tinder, the supply-demand math is against you in most cities - that's not fixable with hacks, only with better inputs: photos, bio, selectivity, and faster messaging. Fix those four and the numbers move. Everything else is noise.
