Mexico Faces 59 Million Cyberattacks a Day

As Mexico races toward a more connected future, it's also becoming one of the most targeted countries in Latin America for cyber-crime.

Mexico has made impressive strides in expanding internet access and digital infrastructure. By the end of 2024, over 112 million Mexicans (roughly 86.5% of the population) over six years old—had internet access, according to Statista. That’s a dramatic increase from just five years ago, and the trend is expected to continue, surpassing 130 million users by 2028.

But as digital adoption soars, so do the risks. Cloudflare, a leading internet security company, revealed that in Q1 of 2025 alone, its systems detected and blocked 59 million cyber threats per day within Mexico. It’s as if half the country were being targeted by cyberattacks on a daily basis.

Phishing remains the number one cyber threat in Mexico, acting as the starting point for around 95% of successful attacks, according to Cloudflare. Other common tactics include:

  • Business Email Compromise (BEC)
  • Mobile device vulnerabilities
  • Web-based attacks
  • Social engineering scams

The sophistication of these attacks continues to grow. One rising concern is deepfakes (AI-generated fake videos and audio). Identity fraud generated with deepfakes already represents more than 10% of the fraud attempts detected by Sumsub.

Despite the growing risks, many organizations in Mexico still see cybersecurity as a cost rather than an investment. A Forrester study cited by _Cloudflare _showed that companies investing in robust cybersecurity infrastructure reported an average 238% return on investment (ROI). By prioritizing security, businesses can accelerate their digital transformation with confidence, knowing they’re building on a secure foundation.
