Dementra is an AI-powered smart anklet and mobile application ecosystem designed to provide safer and smarter care for individuals living with dementia. Our system solves the critical problem of "wandering" and safety monitoring, which are constant concerns for families. By bridging the gap between wearable hardware and real-time mobile alerts, Dementra empowers both the patients (by ensuring their safety) and their family caregivers (by reducing the stress of constant manual monitoring).
The preparation for DesignExpo 2025 was a team effort. I focused on practicing the script while contributing to our video presentation and poster design to ensure our message was clear.
The moment I stepped on stage was a personal breakthrough. As someone who struggles with stage fright and usually avoids public speaking, the energy of the expo was both nerve-wracking and exhilarating. Beyond my own pitch, I truly enjoyed seeing the creative solutions my peers developed—it felt like being part of a community of innovators.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned from pitching a technical project like Dementra is that effective communication is a "translation layer."
When explaining technical ideas to people who aren't tech-savvy, I realized:
- Focus on the "So What?": People don't always need to know the specific code or database structure; they need to know how the AI will keep their loved ones safe.
- Empathy over Complexity: A good pitch isn't about using big words; it's about showing that you understand the user's pain.
- The "Human" in Tech: I learned to explain our AI not just as an algorithm, but as a "digital guardian" for the family.
