Game install location: NVMe vs SATA SSD vs HDD — what matters in 2026

The drive you install games on affects load times, texture streaming, and open-world stutters. Here's a practical breakdown for 2026 hardware.

HDD for games

Still functional for games that don't stream assets heavily. Problematic for:

  • Open world games (GTA V, RDR2, Elden Ring) — constant streaming causes stutter
  • Games with large numbers of small files (modded Skyrim, some JRPGs)
  • Any game using DirectStorage

Load times on HDD are 3-5x longer than SSD. For competitive games where map load time matters (CS2 warmup, Valorant agent select), HDD is a real disadvantage.
