Optimizing Windows for competitive FPS: the hierarchy of impact

Not all Windows optimizations are equal. Here's a ranked list by actual impact on competitive FPS, so you know where to spend time first.

Tier 1 — Major impact

Power plan: Ultimate Performance
Eliminates CPU frequency scaling. One of the highest-impact single changes. 5-15% improvement in 1% lows on most systems.

Disable Mouse Pointer Precision
Removes the acceleration curve. Not an FPS change but directly affects aiming precision.

Disable Game DVR / Xbox Bar
Removes background GPU encoder. 3-8% GPU overhead eliminated.

Process priority via IFEO
Game threads get scheduled ahead of background processes. Directly improves frame consistency.

Tier 2 — Meaningful impact

Win32PrioritySeparation = 38
Better foreground scheduling. Improves 1% lows, visible in frame time graphs.

MMCSS Games priority = 6, High
Game thread gets more CPU time from the multimedia scheduler.

MPO disabled
Eliminates frame pacing irregularities on AMD and some NVIDIA setups.

Nagle off, NIC interrupt moderation off
Reduces in-game ping and jitter.

Tier 3 — Minor but cumulative

Timer resolution, NTFS last access time, memory compression, telemetry services, browser cache size.

Individually small. Combined with Tier 1 and 2 changes, they complete the picture.

Tier 4 — Marginal or situational

IRQ affinity, USB polling optimization, L3 cache latency tuning. Relevant for extreme competitive setups, negligible for most.

IzanagiOP applies all tiers systematically. Start with Tier 1 for immediate gains. https://terweb.lt/
