DDR4 3200MHz vs 3600MHz, CL16 vs CL18 — the benchmarks show differences, but are they real in gaming? Here's the honest answer.
Frequency vs latency
Higher frequency means more data per second. Lower CAS latency means faster response to a memory request. The metric that matters for gaming is true latency in nanoseconds:
Latency (ns) = (CAS / frequency_MHz) × 2000
CL16 at 3200MHz = 10ns. CL18 at 3600MHz = 10ns. Identical real latency despite different specs on paper.
Where RAM speed matters in gaming
Games that are CPU-bottlenecked benefit from faster RAM because the CPU is constantly feeding data to/from RAM. Shooters in particular — frame generation depends on fast access to game state.
Ryzen CPUs (especially 3D V-Cache models) are more RAM-sensitive than Intel because of their memory subsystem architecture. AMD's Infinity Fabric runs at half the memory frequency — 3600MHz RAM = 1800MHz IF, which is the sweet spot.
Dual channel
This is the biggest gain available without buying new hardware. If you have two RAM sticks, they must be in the correct slots (typically A2+B2, not A1+B1 — check your motherboard manual).
Single channel vs dual channel = roughly 10-20% performance difference in CPU-bound games.
XMP/EXPO profile
By default, your RAM runs at JEDEC speeds (usually 2133 or 2400MHz) regardless of what it says on the label. Enable XMP (Intel) or EXPO (AMD) in BIOS to run at rated speed.
