Discord's desktop client is built on Electron — a framework that embeds Chromium. Running Discord is roughly equivalent to running a Chrome tab. Here's how to reduce its overhead during gaming.
Hardware acceleration
Discord uses GPU hardware acceleration for rendering its UI. This competes with your game for GPU resources.
Discord Settings → Advanced → Hardware Acceleration → disable.
This switches Discord rendering to CPU, which is cheaper overall when gaming since your GPU is fully utilized by the game.
Discord overlay
The in-game overlay renders voice chat indicators per frame. Disable it:
Discord Settings → Overlay → Enable in-game overlay → off.
Update checker
Discord checks for updates at startup and periodically. This network request and process spawn happens at unpredictable times. Can't fully disable this, but keeping Discord minimized reduces window rendering overhead.
Video codec hardware acceleration
Discord uses hardware video decoding for streams and video calls. If you're not watching streams or in video calls, this is irrelevant. If you are:
Settings → Voice & Video → Video Codec → disable hardware acceleration for video.
Reduce quality when gaming
If you're in a video call while gaming, reduce your camera quality to 360p/480p — this reduces encode overhead significantly.
Alternative: browser Discord
Running Discord in a browser tab is sometimes lighter than the Electron desktop app on lower-end hardware. Browser's process isolation also means Discord can't consume GPU memory the same way.
