Yes, we used to have a messaging system — but it had two problems:
It had too much technical debt relative to the rest of the site.
It wasn't E2E encrypted — which isn't abnormal, but we felt like we wanted better privacy standards to really lean in to this area.
We will be introducing some features which will help replace some of what was missing, but also, in the long-term we want Forem (the open source platform that powers DEV and others) to have extensions/plugins and messaging could make its way back in that way potentially.
These are long-term things, so no short term plans to re-introduce chat, but I agree with the assessment that it could add to the space if properly thought out.
