I like Dev.to more than medium, the most important reason is its simplicity and free.
I recently met many friends in the Dev community.

Connect (chat) used to be a feature on Dev but was removed.
Here's the post about why.

Really thanks for your comment and now I am confused π
Yes, we used to have a messaging systemΒ β but it had two problems:
We will be introducing some features which will help replace some of what was missing, but also, in the long-term we want Forem (the open source platform that powers DEV and others) to have extensions/plugins and messaging could make its way back in that way potentially.
These are long-term things, so no short term plans to re-introduce chat, but I agree with the assessment that it could add to the space if properly thought out.
Yes I think the same tbh
hello friend π, please read the last 3-4 lines, and tell your ideaπ‘
I think the missing feature for now is chat, because it is a blog after all.
thanks :)
Also, what i think is worth adding is gists, like github gists because dev is also dedicated to devs who ask/give help to each others
you can already embed gists, so I'm not sure how this needs to be added?
Thanks so much for your suggestion :)
We work for this π―πͺ
Will get your wish as soon as possible π€
Yea the message option sounds nice!
Do you have any other idea to improve this further?
For example in (Discord + WhatsApp = mix ) + Trello + your idea.
But we always make it simple and user friendly the user interface.
Instead of having like full on messages like WhatsApp or messages, you could have like threads with different users instead.
wow! Thanks π€
Yea itβs something Iβve seen in another forum and itβs really effective.
No problem!
nice :)
I never thought you'd ask, yes. There is a world that uses these tools to do things other than "web development". And that world includes, but by no means is limited to GIS, location intelligence, web mapping, ETL tools and workflows, data munging and analysis, mashups (remember those?), algorithms, and scripts. And web frameworks are (mostly) a means to an end. The folks that do this stuff rarely have any "dev" in their job title...or even in their job description. However, they do development with tools like Postgres, PostGIS, GDAL/OGR, GeoPy, PANDAS, etc. Is that world so different as to not be a part of "DEV"? Asking for a friend.
What you say is true.
Now my friend and I are the only ones working on it.
We do not have ai large scale experience. But we will learn and accept with the help of those who know ai tech.
And since I am also a member of the dev community I am not going to create one against this.
Since the MSG options that many in the dev community are looking forward to in the future at dev.to, we have decided to make this a different social media instead of copying dev.
I don't think chat or private messaging needs to be built in here. I use other channels for that already, and they are discoverable from my profile. By contrast, I don't generally post longform technical content and get involved in discussions around other similar content on other sites - that's how I use DEV / Forem communities. YMMV, but I think the tendency of many different apps and sites to evolve into their own chat systems (Instagram being a classic example here) is all that helpful.
I agree on the point with the messaging. Would be great to have it.
Thanks for your response :)
