People are not constant output machines. Everybody is going through something and most of the time it is kept way under wraps. Some folks are dealing with more than their fare share but still show up and deliver their all. But it might be breaking them slowly. As a people leader, you can help:

  • πŸ§‘β€πŸ€β€πŸ§‘ Make sure you are creating a space for your people where they can be those flawed people with real things happening to them.
  • πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ Give individuals the support they need to be at their best.
  • πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ Avoid the urge to 'sprint' constantly. Think of it as a marathon and ensure pace is reasonable, sustainable, and moving forward.
  • πŸ‘‚ Listen to what folks are saying. Sometimes all they need is somebody to understand what they are going through.
  • 🧭 If advice is desired, try to provide tactics or tools to help people move forward, but keep it to the role duties.

The advice piece can be tricky, especially when you aren't an expert in the issue they are working through. The key there is to hone in on how it affects their role and what adjustments could be made to allow for their role to work best within the new constraints they find themselves in.

Things in our lives affect our balance and how much we can bring of ourselves into different aspects of our lives. Sometimes, the tank is empty. Other times, we think it's full but the tank is just smaller now. It can be incredibly frustrating to not be able to get to where you used to get to and part of each individuals' adjustment will be figuring out what the 'new normal' is for them.

As a people leader, your job here is to help them find the definition in their role that matches to this new normal, and adjust as time goes on. People are changing every day and teams need to adapt!
