Free courses are only useful if they are open when you want to start. I checked five on 30 October 2026. They are all self-paced and have no registration deadline or cohort dates. They cover agent security, analytics engineering, building agents, the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and plain-English AI basics.
MCP Security Fundamentals (freeCodeCamp)
Format: self-paced video on the freeCodeCamp.org YouTube channel, about 2 hours. Cost: free.
This is for developers who connect AI agents to external tools, databases and APIs. Giving an agent the ability to act creates a new attack surface. The course shows how classic bugs such as command injection, privilege escalation and token leakage play out when an agent acts on untrusted data. It frames the problem around Simon Willison's "lethal trifecta": private data, untrusted content and external communication. It also covers how to build a security programme around MCP. Some prior familiarity with MCP helps, although the course also covers the basics.
dbt for Data Analytics & Engineering (Luke Barousse)
Format: self-paced video, 8+ hours, free on YouTube. Level: beginner to dbt, but you need SQL basics and some comfort with the terminal.
It is aimed at analysts moving toward analytics engineering and at data engineers adding dbt to their toolkit. You turn scattered SQL scripts into a tested, documented, version-controlled pipeline. The first half runs locally on DuckDB. The second half moves to Databricks Free Edition, which the course describes as a permanently free workspace that needs no credit card. All the tools used are free, and the dataset is a year of real job postings. A companion GitHub repo contains the reference projects.

Hugging Face AI Agents Course
Format: self-paced, in units, with a final benchmark assignment. Level: beginner to intermediate; you need basic Python and a free Hugging Face account.
The course goes from what an agent is to a working agent scored against a benchmark. It teaches three frameworks side by side: smolagents, LangGraph and LlamaIndex. The course and its certification are free. One caveat is that some third-party reviews point out that free Hugging Face accounts get no included monthly inference credits. If you run heavier exercises on hosted inference, you may need to pay for that part or use local models.

Hugging Face MCP Course
Format: self-paced, with community challenges. Level: beginner to informed; you need basic AI and LLM concepts.
This free course was built in partnership with Anthropic. It starts with MCP fundamentals, architecture and core concepts. It then moves to hands-on work with the established MCP SDKs, so you can build applications that use external data and tools. The certification process is free.

Elements of AI (University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn)
Format: self-paced online course. Level: absolute beginner; no programming or complicated maths needed.
This is the best option on the list for non-engineers. It explains what AI is, what it can and cannot do, and how it affects daily life. A university partner (NTNU) estimates roughly 25 hours to complete. A second course, Building AI, covers the algorithms behind AI methods and recommends some basic Python.

How we picked these
Criteria: (1) free to access without a trial period, (2) open for enrolment or viewing on 30 October 2026, (3) an official provider, instructor or course page was available, (4) a mix of levels, from non-coders to working engineers, and (5) topics that are in demand: agents, MCP, security and data engineering. Data was checked on 30 October 2026. Course lengths come from the providers or from the university partners that run the course. Where reviewers disagreed on duration, I left the figure out.
I left out Stanford's agent courses. The CS329Z lectures are only open to enrolled students. The CS329A recordings are on YouTube, but I did not verify a link for them.
