Why Event-Driven Architecture?

When we first launched our backend engineering podcast in 2022, we used a monolithic architecture: a single Flask app handled RSS feed generation, ad insertion, donation processing, and payout calculations. It worked for the first 6 months with 2k monthly downloads, but as we scaled to 15k downloads, we hit three critical issues: (1) Ad insertion failures: if our ad partner’s API was down, the entire RSS feed would return 500 errors, cutting downloads by 40% during outages. We evaluated three alternative architectures before settling on the event-driven design: (1) Serverless (AWS Lambda): Cold start latency of 1-3 seconds for Python runtimes made RSS feed p99 latency unacceptable (we target <200ms for feed requests). (2) Monolithic with background workers: Still coupled core feed generation to monetization logic, leading to blocked requests during ad partner outages.
