If you’re running apps on a VPS and wondering cloudflare r2 vs s3, the real question isn’t “which is better?”—it’s “which one fits my traffic pattern, egress profile, and operational tolerance?” For most VPS_HOSTING setups, storage cost is rarely the killer; bandwidth surprises and integration friction usually are.

What actually matters for VPS hosting object storage

When your compute lives on a VPS (think digitalocean, Hetzner, Linode, etc.), object storage is typically used for:

If you’re already using Cloudflare for DNS/CDN/WAF, adding R2 can simplify your mental model and reduce billing surprises without forcing a full platform migration. If you’re not, S3 remains the safe baseline—especially when “it must work in every edge case” matters more than shaving bandwidth costs.
