In the age of AI, is language no longer necessary?
I’ve been seeing this kind of statement a lot recently, but it seems that those who say this probably live solely online and don’t have any real-life need to use a second language.
Communicating in someone else’s language carries a human warmth that AI will never be able to replace—unless one day brainwave communication is invented (and even if that happens, many ethical and safety concerns mean it’s unlikely to become a reality within the next century).
What’s more, learning a language is also a process of learning its culture. Rigid AI translations will never truly replace someone who is genuinely fluent in a second language.
Over-reliance on AI could lead to greater differences between people in the future, and this is something I think we should be cautious about. That said, unless it’s face-to-face communication, I would also rely on AI to assist with translation and communication.
