The Question You're Not Asking in Job Interviews

Interviewers can tell when you're performing versus when you're genuinely curious. Most candidates go into interviews ready to prove they're qualified. That's fine. But it's not what makes someone stand out.

What actually separates good candidates: The candidates who get offers aren't just answering questions. They're asking questions that show they actually understand the role, they care about the company's specific situation, and they're thinking about how they'd add value.

The question most people don't ask: What's the biggest challenge someone in this role faces in the first 90 days? This question shows you're thinking about the job from the company's perspective, not just your own career. It gives you actual information about what success looks like. It signals you're already considering how you'd add value.

The second question: If you could hire someone to solve one problem this year, what would it be? This is bolder. It gets at real priorities.

Why this matters: Interviewers are evaluating two things: Can you do the job? Will you fit? Asking real questions shows you're thinking about both.

I put together a complete interview prep system: 50 common questions, STAR method templates, research checklists, salary negotiation scripts.
