Why You Should Be Writing More at Work

Not for content. For clarity. Most people avoid writing at work because they think it means writing documents or reports. But writing at work is really about making your thinking better.

What writing actually does: When you write about a problem, you find out if you actually understand it. If you can't write a clear paragraph about something, you probably don't understand it as well as you think. Writing forces you to commit to a thought.

Where to start: Write short updates instead of sending long Slack messages. Write a one-paragraph brief instead of having a 30-minute meeting. Write your idea down before you schedule the meeting to discuss it. Small writing. Every day. Just to think.

The real benefit: The people who write clearly at work are the people who get promoted. Not because they're better writers. Because their ideas are clearer, and clarity is a competitive advantage.

I put together a work writing system with daily prompts, a thinking journal template, and a structure for turning writing into decisions.
