Why You're Losing Ideas Before You Act on Them

It's not a creativity problem. It's a capture problem. You had a great idea this morning. Now it's gone. You remember having it, but the details are fuzzy. This isn't a memory problem. It's a capture problem.

Why ideas disappear: Ideas are fragile. They exist in a specific mental state — a moment of context, energy, and focus. When that state changes, the idea can evaporate if you haven't captured it. The solution isn't to have a better memory. It's to capture faster than you think.

The 30-second rule: When you have an idea, spend 30 seconds writing it down. Not a full description. Just enough to reconstruct the idea later. 'Email re: Q3 budget format' is enough. You don't need to capture the whole idea. Just enough to remember you had one.

Where capture systems fail: Most people use notes apps, and the notes app becomes a graveyard. Ideas go in, nothing comes out. The system is too slow, too structured. What works: the fastest possible capture. Just dump the idea and move on. Review later. Organize later. The capture is what matters now.

The only system you need: Capture first. Organize later. Review weekly. This is the entire system.

I put together a simple idea capture system in Notion. Two templates: one for quick capture, one for weekly review. Stop losing ideas. Capture them in 30 seconds.
