Developer diary #19. When open-source product is closing.

Maybe I am mistaking, but I have a feeling, that many open-source tools shift to close state. I mean, they shift from free tools for developers, very often supported by community, to product with different subscription plans, and also with free plan that cause only tears. At the same time, they continue to use ideas that generate community, only with the own implementation. It was a funny fact on conference, one developer suggests to use earlier versions of library because it is free and still stable and useful.

So, what is my opinion, market start slightly change focus from invention of something new to direction of maximization of revenue from existing approaches and solutions. I mean, It is not rocket since to take something existing and make similar solution, pack it in new library, add more user-friendly UI if it is applicable, make sexy landing page with comments of satisfy users and sell it to developers. Someone tells this is market, it works like this, people work, and they are able to get money for own efforts. But in this case, open-source projects play role of free sources, win only who first effective utilize it.

It is only my feeling. Do you feel the same? It will be interesting to read your opinion about that tendency.

You can find me in X, GitHub, medium or LinkedIn. Thanks for your time and see you in next post.
