Korea is one of those destinations where the season you pick changes the whole trip. Show up at the wrong time and you are fighting humidity, crowds, or closed mountain trails. Here is an honest season-by-season guide so you can match your visit to what you actually want.

Spring (April to early May): the sweet spot

This is peak season for a reason. Cherry blossoms sweep up from the south, daytime temperatures sit in a comfortable range, and the whole country feels like it is exhaling after winter. The trade-off is that everyone knows this, so popular spots in Seoul and Gyeongju get busy and flights cost more. Book early.

Summer (June to August): hot, wet, and lively

Korean summer is humid, and the monsoon rains (장마) usually land in July. It is not ideal for long days of sightseeing, but it is the season for beaches, water festivals, and the energy of cities at night. If you come now, plan indoor options for the wettest weeks and keep your itinerary flexible.

Autumn (late September to November): the other sweet spot

Many regular visitors quietly think autumn beats spring. The air is dry and clear, the heat is gone, and from mid-October the fall foliage turns the mountains gold and red. Crowds are lighter than cherry-blossom season and the food culture is at its best around harvest time. If you can only pick one window, this is a strong choice.

Winter (December to February): cold but rewarding

Winters are genuinely cold, especially with wind, but they unlock things no other season offers: ski resorts, quiet palaces dusted with snow, and the lunar new year atmosphere. Pack properly and the low-season prices and empty attractions are a real bonus.

So when should you go?

For most first-time visitors, late April or mid-to-late October give you the best weather-to-crowd balance. Choose summer only if you are after festivals and nightlife, and winter only if you want skiing or have a high tolerance for cold.
