One new product pulls the old model out by the roots

IKEA's recently leaked Dubbelkisel driver is making waves in the smart home world. It isn't a bulb. It isn't a wall switch. It's an LED driver power supply — the exact category we live and breathe at Nexlamp.

Thread is the "postal network" that language likes to run on: an IPv6-based, low-power mesh network. Every powered Thread device can act as a router, forwarding messages for others. If one node drops, the mesh reroutes automatically.

Combine the two, and you get: a driver that joins the network once, can be controlled by Apple Home and Google Home simultaneously, and acts as a mesh node to help the sensor across the room stay online. For large homes, villas, and commercial spaces, that's a real stability win.

Why the driver layer, not the bulb layer?

Smart lighting has gone through two phases:

  • 1.0: Smart bulbs with built-in Wi-Fi/Zigbee. Easy upgrade, but high power draw, high cost, and every bulb is its own wireless node.
  • 2.0: External wireless modules added to drivers or dimmers. Good for retrofits, but adds wiring, failure points, and space constraints.

Driver vendors must decide: run the full Matter SDK in-house, or use a module? In-house is flexible; modules are fast. For smaller manufacturers, starting with a module to stake a claim, then moving to custom design, is the pragmatic path.

2. Multi-protocol coexistence isn't optional

Matter isn't here to kill Zigbee — it's here to make peace. IKEA's Dubbelkisel keeps Zigbee support so existing remotes and sensors pair directly. In China, DALI-2, 0-10V, and BLE Mesh are also widespread.

So 2026 driver products will likely be Matter + Thread + Zigbee/DALI multi-mode. That raises the bar for firmware architecture, RF isolation, and certification testing.

3. Security certifications become an export gate

EU RED regulation and U.S. security requirements are tightening. Silicon Labs positions SixG301 with PSA Level 4 security to help device makers comply. For driver vendors targeting cross-border OEM or Amazon, Matter certification plus PSA/UL certifications will become as basic as CE/CCC.

Three practical steps for fixture and driver makers

  1. Treat Matter as a translator, not a revolution. Don't scrap your product line. Launch one or two Matter-ready drivers for common cabinet, downlight, and strip applications, and test the market.
  2. Pay attention to Thread Router capability. A powered device that also acts as a Thread router is a real selling point for network coverage. That's the core advantage of Matter-over-Thread drivers over pure Wi-Fi.
  3. Budget time and money for certification. Matter, Thread, and ecosystem compatibility testing take longer than traditional CCC/CE. Start 6–9 months early to avoid missing the Q4 shipping window.

Bottom line

The smart-lighting battle is shifting from "whose lights are brighter" to "whose lights can connect to more platforms." Matter over Thread isn't a marketing concept — it's a technology roadmap already being shipped by IKEA, Philips Hue, Nanoleaf, Ltech, and others.

For LED driver manufacturers, the 2026 question isn't whether to do Matter. It's when, at what cost, and whether you can catch this replacement wave.
