Cheap Domains in Indonesia: Which Extension Should Developers Pick? (From Rp 1,500/year)

Every side project starts the same way: you build something cool, then get stuck on the boring part. Where do I buy a domain, and which extension should I pick?

If you're building for the Indonesian market (or you're just based here), prices and options can look confusing. In this post I'll go through the most common extensions, what they're good for, and how to register one quickly. I'll use Helipod's domain page as the reference for pricing and features.

What is a domain, really?

A domain is the human-readable address of your website or app, for example helipod.io. Without one, visitors would have to type your server's IP address. A domain also lets you set up custom email, SSL, subdomains for staging, and more.

Which extension should you pick?

Here's a quick guide based on the use cases listed on the Helipod page:

My quick recommendations

• Just experimenting or building a portfolio? Go with .my.id or .web.id. They're cheap and clearly Indonesian.
• Launching a small shop or company profile? .biz.id is by far the cheapest way to get a real domain.
• Building a serious product for Indonesian users? Consider .id for local trust, or .com if you plan to go global.
• Shipping a developer tool or app? .dev and .app look professional and enforce HTTPS, but they cost more per year.

Features worth checking before you buy

Price isn't everything. These are the features listed on the page:

• DNS management from the admin panel
• Instant activation after payment
• Auto-renewal so you don't lose the domain by accident
• Transfer lock to protect against unauthorized transfers
• WHOIS privacy (listed as available; the FAQ says you enable it from the admin panel)
• Domain transfer from other registrars (the FAQ says it usually takes 5 to 7 business days)

A useful detail from the FAQ: if a domain expires, it goes through a 30-day grace period and then a 30-day redemption period, and renewing during those windows may cost extra. So turn on auto-renewal.

How to register a domain (3 steps)

1. Search for the domain name you want and check availability.
2. Choose an extension and pay.
3. Your domain is active, usually within minutes.

Then point your DNS records to your server or hosting provider and you're live.

A note on SSL

Free Let's Encrypt SSL is available for domains hosted on Helipod VPS. If your domain points somewhere else, you'll need to set up SSL manually with your own host.
