The Real-World Pain
You're running into a classic monitoring blind spot. The reason you're seeing workflows marked as 'active: true' while completely failing is that the n8n API status only reflects configuration state, not runtime health. If your instance drops offline (like a laptop closing) or a node throws an unhandled exception, the workflow stays 'active' on paper while execution halts.
To fix this permanently, you want to stop relying on simple status flags and implement two things:
- Hit the
/executions?workflowId={id}&status=error&limit=1endpoint alongside your workflow check to catch recent failures programmatically. - Set up a dedicated Error Trigger node that routes runtime crashes directly to a Slack/Discord alert instead of letting executions die silently.
I have a pre-built production-tested error-handling sub-workflow JSON template that automatically catches node failures, appends execution context, and alerts your team instantly without cluttering your main architecture. Drop me a DM and I'll send over the JSON file so you can import it directly.
