How to Calculate Your Exact Age in Years, Months, and Days

"How old am I?" sounds like a question with an obvious answer — until you need it exactly. Filling out a form, figuring out a baby's age in weeks, counting down to a milestone birthday, or working out how many days you've been alive: suddenly "I'm 34" isn't precise enough. Here's how to get the exact number, and why the math trips people up.

Why age math is sneakier than it looks

Calculating age isn't just "this year minus your birth year." Two things get in the way:

1. Whether your birthday has happened yet this year. If you were born in November and it's currently March, you're one year younger than a straight subtraction suggests.
2. Months have different lengths, and leap years exist. February throws everything off, and every four years an extra day sneaks in.

That's why doing it in your head — or even on a basic calculator — leads to off-by-one errors.

The manual method

To get your exact age:

1. Subtract the birth year from the current year.
2. If the current month/day is before your birthday this year, subtract 1.
3. For months and days, count forward from your last birthday to today.

Example: born June 20, 2016; today is July 27, 2026. You've had your 2026 birthday, so you're 10 years, 1 month, and 7 days old.

• In weeks: how pediatricians track babies for the first few months.
